CHUCK PATTERSON

Am I now or will I be a candidate for any government office?

The short answer is: NOT LIKELY.

I have, for most of my thinking life, considered a political career.
Those ambitions were not inspired because I have a need for power, or an overwhelming desire to be the subject of editorials. As silly as it sounds by modern standards: I wanted to make a difference!

I didn’t want to be President Patterson, or Congressman Patterson or Senator Patterson. I had no desire to leave my home to become a part of the D.C. fiasco. COLUMBUS OHIO IS MY HOME. If politics was going to be a part of my life it was going to be done here, at home.

In recent years, I have seen a change in my hometown that saddens me. A municipal government that is in my opinion far more interested in what it “looks like” than what it is. Leaders gather for photo opportunities and publicity events, but they are not on the front lines with the members of struggling communities trying to improve lives.

I live in what has traditionally been known as “a good neighborhood”. In the last 3 years my garage has been a target for graffiti on two occasions, my boys have had two bicycles stolen from our yard, I have had two vans with  windows broken by vandals, I have had three occasions when property has been stolen from one of my vehicles and I had an attempted home break-in through a window. In those same years our police department has dwindled in ratio numbers, the community crime patrol has been all but de-funded and my city spent $60million on a bridge that was supposed to cost $20million. With this considered the voters still approved non-public “executive session” meetings for our city council and our mayor claimed he didn’t read the ballot language for the casino issue. Our parks are neglected, our streets are dirty and more dangerous each day, my neighborhood is over-allocated on sexual offenders...it’s overwhelming. I LOVE THIS CITY SO MUCH! It is so very sad to see where we are and to dread where we are going.

I was always willing to be part of a governing team that would work hard, be honest and move us forward as a city but I don’t think I have the same zest for going back and repairing all the damage I see just to get my city back to where it used to be. So much ground has been lost...
